This private three acre estate was originally designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw in 1925. The home and gardens remained neglected for over thirty years. Following the home renovation, the homeowners focused on returning the gardens to their former elegance. Existing walls were rebuilt and bluestone terraces re-laid using the original stone. Boxwood hedges were planted to create formal lines, and softened by an abundance of shrub roses, grasses, and perennials. Perimeter borders were planted with Hawthorn, Viburnum, and an array of wildflowers. Trellises were built with the same detail as the original woodworking, using hand carved wood pegs in place of nails. But a one-of-a-kind focal point for the entry courtyard remained elusive.

The solution turned out to be a true buried treasure. The “Fountain of Rabbits” was found buried in the debris at the rear of the site. The four ton fountain was placed in the courtyard, creating a whimsical and charming focal point for all to view upon entering the estate. The surrounding space was planted with Boxwood, Iris, Annuals, and Bulbs for seasonal interest. The splendor of the fully restored gardens may now be enjoyed year-round, from every path and window of this beautiful estate.
