The owners of this lovely two-story brick home in the northern suburbs of Chicago wanted a backyard patio of generous proportions. The space would have to accommodate large gatherings, and also capitalize on the gently sloping site.

The resulting design created a multi-level outdoor living space that is gracious and large without being overwhelming. The upper levels of the patio are embraced by seat walls, providing valuable extra seating.

The lowest of the three levels is reached via a stairway that culminates in a circular seating area surrounding a built-in fire pit. The slope accommodates yet another seat wall that doubles as a retaining wall in this final “outdoor room”.

A pair of pillars indicate the location of the stairs and further define the space, guiding visitors from “room to room”. Elegant furnishings compliment the natural appearance of the hardscape material. Plantings that provide multi-season interest soften the perimeter of the space.

The thoughtful design of this outdoor room has dramatically increased the pleasure and value the owners derive from their home.
