This homeowner wanted to transform an unsightly space into a more visually appealing setting, and provide a sound barrier to reduce noise from the nearby highway. Through close consultation with the client, a design scheme was proposed to include a seating area and water feature that are integrated into a seamless outdoor room.

To create the proper elevation for the project, thirty cubic yards of topsoil had to be wheeled in by hand from the street over 200 feet away. The width and the length of the basin were expanded to maintain a minimal depth in order to provide for the safety of small children and pets. An 11 x 7 x 3 foot basin was constructed to hold the volume of water needed to generate a flow of 3,500 gallons per hour. In order to enhance the peaceful harmony of the waterfall and its surroundings, an intimate seating area was incorporated using a 180 square feet of Muddy Creek flagstone. The waterfall was constructed with multiple levels that would yield the desired level of sound.

Each level was positioned to allow sound to travel a greater distance as it splashed from one level to the next. Fourteen tons of hand selected Shenandoah Outcropping stone was installed. Finally, a combination of shrubs, perennials, and annuals were installed to help prevent the erosion of soil and naturalize the appearance of the waterfall. Fifteen different varieties of plants, selected to blend into the semi-wooded location, were installed.

The resulting effect is beautiful and calm, and adds a charming focal point to the client’s outdoor spaces.
